Mini Camp underway - thoughts on July

It must be nice to see the Coliseum ice buzzing with young players trying to make an impression on Garth and the coaching staff.  This mini-camp is always a chance for guys to prove their worth, and for the invited folks who don’t have a contract or a team, it is a chance to make someone look up and say hmmmm.

Of course the 2011 draftees are there.  Ryan Strome is there playing on a line with Nino Niederreiter.  The #5 picks from the last two drafts are sharing a lot of information, and I am sure that Nino is telling Ryan to play strong and hard, and perhaps he may get the same opportunity as the young Swiss forward got last season.

Strome, according to reporters at camp, has been working hard for this moment to skate on an NHL ice rink.  He knows what is going on here, and he hopes that this is a small step to a potential career on Long Island first at the old barn, and then at the new Islanders rink.

The Blue-White scrimmage will take place on Saturday night.  Unfortunately, I will be at a Ducks game (planned many months in advance).  So I look forward to hear some info from the media and the Blog boxers that will be there covering it.

As far as July is concerned, I really did not expect Garth to shovel all sorts of money on players – just to get to the floor.  As usual, the man is sticking to the plan of being smart and getting the right fit of player, character, and man to fit this young team.  With Marty Reasoner, he gets a guy that will fill a Doug Weight leadership role, be a key faceoff man, and be a gentleman that the younger guys can look up to.

I just have a strange suspicion that Garth is by no where done yet.  There really has not been ‘trades’ made at this time of the summer, and that is where I think Mr. Snow will make a splash.

We at Eyes on Isles will continue to do our ‘late’ report cards on the guys, during the summer, and will chime in on anything else going on.

Don’t forget Nassau residents, VOTE YES ON AUG 1.

Also – I am looking for at least one or maybe two more writers to join our staff.  If you like to write and are interested in talking about your favorite team, please send an e-mail to me ([email protected]).

Thanks,
Gary
