Staios Wins a Job

Veteran defenseman Steve Staios came to training camp on a try out basis, but obviously impressed the coaching staff and management during the preseason games he played in for the Isles.

According to the Islanders website, the former Calgary Flame was given a 1 year contract to remain with the team. This will, without a doubt, give the team a solid, experienced blue liner to help the younger guys along. He is not flashy nor is he going to be an offensive threat, but Staios will give the Islanders some grit and stability.

Steve Staios might not be the type of d-man a lot of Islander fans were hoping or expecting to see join the fold. With all of the talk during the off season, the “feeling” was that someone with a bit more name recognition would be signed or acquired via the trade route. However, as things stand, I believe his presence in the lineup will only help this team throughout the season. Of course, Garth may not be done making any last minute moves, but it is a positive move nonetheless.
