A four game home stand over six days can be the cure for their ills.
However, the four teams that are coming into the Coliseum over the next few days (Detroit, Philadelphia, Buffalo and Nashville) will make it quite the test for the home team.
After a 1-2 road trip, the Islanders hopefully spent the last few days trying to get their systems in order. It was evident to see, especially in the Phoenix game, that the defensive discipline was severely lacking. Now in this forum, I never will say that the Islanders are not trying to get things done. from seeing these guys at practice, and in the locker room, this is a group that is devoutly dedicated to making themselves the best team that they can be. It is just the fact that the assignments get missed, or something just does not go the Islanders way.
It will not be an easy test. The Wings are still the Wings. Loaded on all four lines, six strong defenseman and an all-star goaltender. The Islanders need to play nearly the perfect game to get the two points tonight. Simply, secondary scoring needs to be a big priority. In addition, I think the defensive game needs to be a little simplified. Sometimes, it seems to this amateur reporter than when the boys get away from the basics, the team tends to get lost and goals against go on the scoreboard.
The scoring needs to come from the second and third lines. Michael Grabner is struggling mightily, and needs to get off the schneid. I just believe that something is missing. You can see that is working so hard to get it back, but needs to just keep plugging in.
The Isles need to get a chance to get their game going. With the home fans hopefully providing the encouragement, the resurgence could return tonight. Let’s see if it happens.
