Another of the core Islanders will remain here for a while.

Last night – it was announced that Frans Nielsen has signed a four year extension with the Islanders.  Four years and $11 million for the Danish winger. His cap hit is for $2.75 million per year.  He will receive $2 million next year, $2.5 million for 2013-2014, and $3 and $3.5 million for the following two years from there.

Despite not having the shorthanded goals that he had last season, Nielsen has proved to be a solid faceoff man, and of course, has the NHL’s best ever shootout percentage.

It is great to see GM Garth Snow secure his young talent, allowing them to grow together.  People who think that Snow is not doing the right thing, need to get off the rose tinted glasses (Sorry Vinny)…

Here is a text version of the Islanders press release this morning.

ISLANDERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH NIELSEN ON FOUR-YEAR EXTENSION

Nielsen signs through 2016

UNIONDALE, NY (February 8, 2012) – The New York Islanders announced today that Frans Nielsen has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension. Nielsen’s new deal extends through the 2015-16 season.

Nielsen, 27, has nine goals and 16 assists in 52 games this season. Last year, the Herning, DK, native posted career highs in goals (13), assists (31), points (44), plus-minus rating (+13) and short-handed goals (7). Nielsen co-led the team in plus-minus rating and ranked third on the Islanders in assists. His seven shorthanded markers led the National Hockey League.

“We’re thrilled that Frans has committed to the Islanders for the next four years,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “He has been a key part of our young core for the past six seasons and become one of the better two-way forwards in the league.”

The Islanders selected Nielsen in the third round, 87th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. In 289 career NHL games, all with the Islanders, Nielsen has scored 46 goals and 99 assists with a plus-7 rating. The 6’0, 184-pound center is 20-for-34 in career shootout attempts; his 58.8% success rate ranks first in NHL history among skaters that have more than 12 shootout attempts.
