We are in the second part of our look at the top 10 goalie masks of last season. Earlier in the week I showcased 1-5, so let’s jump right into #6!
6. Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators
This one is just down right scary and looks like it should be on the cover of a Iron Maiden album! David Gunnarsson has turned the Nashville Predator into somewhat of a zombie or as he calls it, the “Voodoo Pred”. Either way it gives me the heebie jeebies but it is a beautiful work of art.
7. Ondrej Pavalec, Winnipeg Jets
Whether or not this actually is indeed a tribute to the Royal Canadian Air Force; I have no idea, but I’m going to look at it that way. This mask shows the old WW2 fighter jet that was so commonly seen. The fighter jets were painted on their fronts to instill terror among the opposing soldiers/civillians.The detail on the leaf and the emblem on the top is stunning. The Air Force should be proud of this salute!
8. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Alright, I know the Rangers are a touchy subject but I have to mention this one. Lundqvist designed this mask to show a tribute to the Swedish film stars of yesterday. Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman are featured on one side and legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman and his movie The Seventh Seal are featured on the otherside. I thought it was a neat idea that had to be mentioned. Ok, no more Ranger talk, I promise!
9. Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets.
Mr. Vezina himself! Bobrovsky must think highly of himself to feature a brick wall on his mask but who can blame him! The man was stunning in goal for the Blue Jackets this year. The cannon firing off to the right is a nice touch so it’s not too cluttered with bricks. Hope his luck continues, I think he’s going to be a solid goaltender for years to come.
10. Kevin Poulin, New York Islanders
Ok to be fair, this mask is from 2012 but it had to be featured. I mean, what would a list be without an Islander mask?! (Sorry, Nabby. I’ll get you next time.) Called the Silver Shine, Gunnarsson gave the Silver Surfer a nice little resting place on top and left side of Poulin’s mask. The silver’s used on top compliment the orange and blue at the bottom. I absolutely love the lighthouse touch as well.
Honorable mention: Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens
There you have it! My look at the top 10 goalie masks of 2013. Can’t wait to see what the 2013-2014 season has in store for our fearless netminders.
