‘The New York Islanders Hardcore’ Pregame Report:

BUFFALO SABRES vs. NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Tonight the New York Islanders (2-2-1, 5 PTS) host the Buffalo Sabres (0-6-1, 1 PT) in game no. 6 of the 2013-14 NHL season. Here’s what you need to know before puck drop…

Where: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, New York

When: 10/14/2013, 7:00 pm EST

Watch: MSG + (HD)

Listen: WRHU 88.7FM, WRCN 103.9FM

The Islanders limp home after suffering two road losses to the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators. In both those losses, New York suffered from periods of weak defensive zone coverage, slow transition and a sputtering offense.

Head coach Jack Capuano has taken the players to task, shuffling up the forward lines and even bringing in veteran Radek Martinek to work out with the team in practice in an effort seen by some as motivation for those already on the active roster.

Either way, this is a very important stretch of games for the Islanders, who play 6 of their next 7 games at the Nassau Coliseum, a building in which, if you remember correctly, they were just not very good last season. Establishing a dominant home ice presence is going to be key going forward for this young group.

Tonight’s opponent, the Buffalo Sabres, limp into Uniondale at 0-6-1 for the worst record in the National Hockey League. They currently reside last in offense with only 7 goals scored in those 7 games. But defensively, they have been more than adequate, ranking 14th in allowing 18 goals against (2.57 per game).

Ryan Miller, who some Islander fans wanted to see in blue and orange this season, will still be wearing blue, white and gold when he takes to the crease tonight for Buffalo. It will be Miller’s 5th start of the season and he brings a .941 save percentage with him.

It is the ultimate trap game for New York , who must not look past Buffalo this evening. For if they do, you might see more than just line juggling from the Islanders front office prior to Thursday’s game against Edmonton.  There is no logical reason Buffalo should get their first win of the season tonight in Long Island.

Then again, nothing is guaranteed right? You still have to work for it.

What They’re Saying…

“You’re not going to win many games scoring one goal,” Sabres coach Ron Rolston said. “We need our top six to step up.” Link

Here’s Jack Capuano on playing Michael Grabner alongside John Tavares and Kyle Okposo tonight: “With Johnny’s vision and his hockey sense, Grabs is a game-breaker and he can move. You’ve got to be first o nthe forecheck. You’ve got to have some speed to get extended zone time. We played those guys together a little bit in Nashville and last year against Tampa Bay when Moulson didn’t play, so we’ll just see how it goes and take it shift by shift.” Link

Capuano, on his plans for playing Matt Donovan: “You don’t want guys to sit too long. The more you get a young guy in, and the more he can continue to watch the video and be in our team meetings and see what we’re trying to do, it’s going to help. Matt will be back in there for sure. He gives us offense and creativity on the blue line. But sitting a game or two isn’t a bad thing for a young player.” Link

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!!

  • Miguel A. Nunez

I say the Isles will win 5-2 tonight, maybe a goal from Tavares and Moulson and possibly Nielsen as well! I’ll be there tonight in section 207, hopefully we pull out a W! We’ll be sure to beat Buffalo tonight, they’re 0-6 and there should be no excuse to lose to them tonight! We’re gonna come out flying from start to finish!

  • Michael DiGirolamo

    4-1 Isles!!!

  • Andy Graziano

Need a big shutdown effort from our D against a struggling offensive team.

  • Rich Diaz

Greetings! So, yes, the buzz is about Matty Moulson and the line changes…

  • Andy Graziano

Boulton and Nelson on for warmups. No Colin McDonald, who didn’t skate this morning.

    • Rich Diaz

Boulton on the 4th line, Nelson where he belongs. Andy, good call on Colin McDonald…you said it on the last podcast. #soothsayer you are

  • Andy Graziano

Nelson, Donovan, McDonald listed as official scratches for Islanders.

    • Rich Diaz

      PMB-FN-JB for line 2

  • Shane Blackburn

Does this mean that the 4th line is gonna play significantly less minutes or is Boulton actually going to get ice time? I again disagree with Donovan, maybe they saw something we didn’t but I thought he looked impressive.

    • Rich Diaz

could be because of the muscle out of Buffalo…idk

      • Andy Graziano

Could be…they have Ott and are playing Scott. But I don’t agree with trying to ‘match’ thuggery.

        • Shane Blackburn

I don’t mind trying to match, but who are they going to double shift because I only see Boulton coming out if necessary.

  • Rich Diaz

Carkner out to stop the goons?

  • Shane Blackburn

Totally agree with what Butch just said about Grabner opening up some space for JT. Buffalo has to be cautious of Grabner’s speed and JT’s skill.

  • Rich Diaz

Matt Moulson in “Third Line Duties” rated NR as in No Reason…

  • Andy Graziano

We shall see how it all shakes out. Make no judgement yet.

  • Rich Diaz

    PMB don’t be MIA

  • Andy Graziano

Staple reporting McDonald is day to day with hip injury.

  • Rich Diaz

seconds away from the drop of the puck…oh wait…there’s tumbleweed skirting by the ice….#ghosttown

  • Shane Blackburn

I would like to see Nelson play everyday but you kind of have to understand he’s young and not gonna play everyday I’m ok with this let’s see what the new lines can produce tonight.

  • Rich Diaz

The boys from BOA chanting WHO’S YOUR CAPTAIN? Nice

  • Rich Diaz

I guess I am talking to myself here. Then again, #normal occurrence

  • Rich Diaz

Carkner and Strait as the d-pair shutdown for the evening

    • Andy Graziano

      Oh boy! So exciting! :)

      • Rich Diaz

        Like watching paintbrushes dry

        • Shane Blackburn

That’s good though isn’t it? A shutdown pair that is exciting means lots or opposing opportunities.

  • Rich Diaz

Grabner with a nice kill their…nothing cute

  • Rich Diaz

Miller tapping stick on ice. He wants attention again. ;)

  • Andy Graziano

Carkner with a swing and a miss and Strait showing no hockey sense once again. Say it with me…….DONOVAN…..

    • Rich Diaz

  • Rich Diaz

Neilsen with a nice pass; Miller gets lucky i Mean he makes a ‘save’

  • Rich Diaz

Isles cannot set up on the PP

    • Rich Diaz

But the PP has more pep and Isles skating better

  • Shane Blackburn

At least they’re shooting the puck so far today.

  • Rich Diaz

    PMB shooting….Hallelujah

  • Dan Chernauskas

    We We MUST score early

    • Rich Diaz

read my mind. THe Cheap-o goal needs to be avoided

  • Shane Blackburn

Putting Moulson on the 3rd line light a fire under his butt, where was that effort the first 5 games?

    • Rich Diaz

And KO is playing at a nice clip as well. PMB skating well, with 2 SOG

  • Andy Graziano

First line was back together for that shift.

    • Shane Blackburn

Cause Grabs just killed the penalty!

  • Andy Graziano

Team showing good jump early on. A lot of energy so far.

    • Rich Diaz

      Nabby looks sharp tonight…

  • Rich Diaz

Bailey misses in front. FO outside zone

  • Shane Blackburn

They’re all hitting tonight as well, it’s like they listen to the podcast lol!

    • Andy Graziano

      They definitely do….lol

      • Rich Diaz

        baa baa booey

  • Shane Blackburn

Who is #51 and what has he done with Frans Nielsen?

  • Andy Graziano

    That’s a nice shot by Frans…..

  • Rich Diaz

say it with me: Nielsen with the TOP SHELF blazing wrister

  • Andy Graziano

I will say this….on that big save by Nabokov, Clutterbuck just standing around not taking anyone. Looks lost out there.

  • Shane Blackburn

That was Bouchard’s chance to make fans love him.

  • Rich Diaz

    another gapping net opportunity lost

  • Rich Diaz

  • Rich Diaz

I tell you a-mac and hamonic messed up royally there. yikes.

  • Rich Diaz

    Nabby lets a squeaker in.

  • Andy Graziano

Horrendous sequence there by 47 and 3…….really bad.

  • Andy Graziano

    Double D whiff……MacDonald and Hamonic.
