Another dangerous game awaits the New York Islanders as they continue their homestand with a match against the Edmonton Oilers.

After suffering a shootout loss on Tuesday to the previously winless Buffalo Sabres, social media has not been kind to the team or management, seemingly scrutinizing and criticizing every move. At the final horn tonight, I am sure that everyone hopes the reaction looks much different.

That success will depend primarily on two major factors; the play of the defense and the power play. Matt Donovan makes his return to the lineup tonight and hopes the lessons he learned from watching the last two games from the press box will benefit his defensive game to complement his offensive skills. Colin McDonald also returns after taking Tuesday off with a sore hip.

The Oilers come in with a ton of offensive talent that will test the Islanders defense but unfortunately for them, still have not learned much on the other side of the red line. They have allowed 32 goals in 7 games (4.57 per game) and are 29th in the league on the penalty kill at just 66.7%.

Taylor Hall (1-5-6), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2-1-3) and Jordan Eberle (2-3-5) are top talents that can terrorize in the offensive zone and have to be watched extremely closely by a defensive unit that has struggled early on in clearances and zone assignments.

Nostalgia will be surely be front and center as well in this matchup, as the teams did not meet last season in the conference only 48 game schedule. Everyone remembers the classic battles of the early and mid 1980s between these two great franchises.

What They’re Saying…

“It’s such a fine line between winning and losing in this league,” forward Jordan Eberle told the team’s official website. “We’re not playing bad by any means. We’re doing a lot of good things but we just can’t get over that line of winning games and I think once we find that way to do that, we have confidence in here that we’ll start winning more.” [link]

Jack Capuano, on what he expects from Edmonton tonight: “It’s a track meet when you play these guys. They’re young, they’re fast. They’ve got D that get up in the play. You never know how the game is going to go when the puck drops. Obviously, you don’t want a wide open game.” [link]

Matt Donovan, on what he gained from sitting out the last two games: “I think just watching overall and thinking to myself what I need to do to get back in the lineup and play well and make the team better. [Being scratched] pushed you that much harder. I’m here now, and I don’t want to get sent back down, so it makes me want to work that much harder to get back in the lineup and stay in the NHL.” [link]

Less than one hour! Can’t wait. I’m expecting a high scoring game from both teams. Should be exciting

  • Andy Graziano

10 minutes to faceoff. Isles and Oilers.

  • Andy Graziano

    Isles starting 96-51-12-47-3-20

  • Andy Graziano

Lets tighten up boys on the defensive end. The offense will take care of itself, especially with Edmonton coming in allowing 4.57 GPG

    • Andrew Goldchain

      Let’s get it done.

    • Shane Blackburn

What was that about tighten up?

  • Andrew Goldchain

Big two points on the line. I find it strange to say that this early in the season but it is true. We need to break the 3 game losing streak and get back into the win column. Edmonton is a good team to do that against with their goaltending woes. Keys to the game are clearing out loose pucks and keeping the crease clear, defensive responsibility and shooting the puck and testing Dubnyk early and often.

  • Mike

Maybe this will work tonight…Let’s Go Islanders!!!

  • Shane Blackburn

Big game here let’s get these 2 pts. Very happy to see Donovan in the lineup tonight!

  • Shane Blackburn

Hamonic needs to have a better game than the first 6 tonight.

  • Andy Graziano

    Shaky early…..jeez

  • Shane Blackburn

If Smyth scores tonight i will be livid.

  • Andy Graziano

Damn that line is really buzzing……

  • Andrew Goldchain

    Looking a little better now

  • Shane Blackburn

Bouchard does the little things well away from the puck and it aggravates me that people don’t notice it.

  • Rich Diaz

Oilers have very little difficulty entering Isles zone

  • Rich Diaz

    Finally! Lubo taking the initiative

  • Rich Diaz

    Lubo with a great shift

  • Shane Blackburn

Hickey looking really good on that last play.

  • Andy Graziano

Damn Okposo….caused that whole Hall mess.

  • Shane Blackburn

It looks to me as if JT doesn’t trust KO always looks for another play before passing it to him. Just my observation.

  • Andrew Goldchain

Good to see Colin McDonald and Donovan back. Already visible in the game.

    • Andy Graziano

Matty played that Smyth rush perfectly.

  • Shane Blackburn

Could we be looking at a potential Cup finals 3 years down the road?

    • Andy Graziano

If Edmonton ever gets their defense figured out but then again you can say the same about us.

  • Shane Blackburn

    HUGE!

  • Andrew Goldchain

There we go. Hamonic seems to be much more offensive minded this year. Driving to the net and pushing the rush more often.

  • Mike

How do we look? I’m still teaching?

  • Shane Blackburn

Let’s see if they read my power play post coming up here lol

  • Andrew Goldchain

    1-0 Isles. Mike.

  • Shane Blackburn

I like this 2nd power play unit alot

  • Mike

    Go isles!! Bailey right

    • Andy Graziano

      Bailey from Hamonic and Bouchard

  • Andy Graziano

Dubynk looks terrible – moving very awkwardly.

    • Rich Diaz

      awful.

  • Rich Diaz

PMB making his bones this homestand. Glad.

    • Andy Graziano

2 secondary assists – still not impressed

  • Andrew Goldchain

Cannot blame Nabakov on that one. Would love to see someone try. Great passing by the Oilers.

  • Andy Graziano

ALL 5 GUYS ON ONE SIDE OF THE ICE. BANTAM CRAP RIGHT THERE.

  • Shane Blackburn

    That’s awful.

  • Shane Blackburn

How does Hall get in there all alone?

  • Andy Graziano

Okposo is horrid. Glides back into D zone and doesnt even get a stick on Hall.

  • Andrew Goldchain

Gotta tighten up defensively. Same mistakes. Martinek is skating with team. Slot him in for Strait?

  • Shane Blackburn

Gotta respond here quickly Dubnyk looks shake have to beat him and even this game up.

  • JoePa

The second one was all on Nabby. He’s good for one or two softies a game.

    • Andy Graziano

Disagree. 3/47/21 all standing around. Why not make it a 2 on 0.

      • JoePa

Softy shot shouldn’t have a rebound that large. Hold onto that puck.

        • Andy Graziano

Sometimes the softie shots are hardest to control.

  • Shane Blackburn

Donovan has looked like the most solid defenseman tonight.

  • Shane Blackburn

Can’t match JT’s line with the Taylor Hall line our #1 is not good enough defensively to play this match up.

  • JoePa

Just have to keep throwing these pucks at the net. They’ll find the back of the net some time.

    • Andy Graziano

      Dubynk is horrid.

  • Mike

My god what is goinl on here?! I just check and Nabby gave up 2 already grr

    • Shane Blackburn

Weak defense on both. One soft rebound but can’t really blame Nabby on either.

    • Shane Blackburn

Okposo is killing me slowly with every shift tonight.

  • http://jpantorno.wix.com/joepantorno Joe Pantorno

Now we see the blaring holes that this team has. Defense has a lot of maturing to do still.

    • Shane Blackburn

I know I am a huge advocate for minors maturation, but I almost wish we would have given Griff a shot.

      • http://jpantorno.wix.com/joepantorno Joe Pantorno

        Yeah, me too.

  • Andy Graziano

I really would not know what to do with 21 if I was Snow. Just does not get it consistently enough.

    • Shane Blackburn

He’s definitely not a first liner, he’s more of a grinder type player. He is like a missile, but can’t slow it down enough to make smart plays for the most part.

  • http://jpantorno.wix.com/joepantorno Joe Pantorno

Clutterbuck “goes over the line?” No such thing in hockey unless your name is Darcy Tucker or the New York Rangers.

    • Andy Graziano

      Eh….analysts being shock jocks..

  • Mike

    Kyle playing bad tonight?

    • Shane Blackburn

      not…the…word

  • Shane Blackburn

Why are we blaming Grabs on that one Hall was all Kyle Okpsos who just let him cruise right in.

  • Rich Diaz

    jt is non entity tonight

  • http://jpantorno.wix.com/joepantorno Joe Pantorno

My dad despises Okposo. It’s downright humorous to watch him watch Ok.

  • http://jpantorno.wix.com/joepantorno Joe Pantorno

Every time he touches the puck he exclaims “Sweet Jesus here we go.”
