Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Islanders just could not generate anything last night. For whatever reason, and a lot of us are done speculating at this point, there was just no jam…..no sauce….no filling…..no whipped topping.

The offense looks in complete disarray, even on a night when the defense looked palatable. The breakout was as sloppy as I have seen since watching a computer versus computer matchup in NHL14 and Carey Price had what has to be considered one of the easiest shutouts of his entire career.

The good news coming from Islanders country is that Evgeni Nabokov made a triumphant return to the Islanders crease and looked very sharp, keeping the Islanders in the game with a number of quality saves and looking very comfortable doing so.

But the one defensive breakdown is all Montreal would need to capitalize on this night and when Thomas Hickey and Aaron Ness made a mess of the defensive zone while captain John Tavares over-extended his shift and was absolutely exhausted, Max Pacioretty tapped in the winning goal from the side of the crease in the 1-0 overtime loss.

I would be extremely surprised to not hear some sort of announcement today from Islanders management with two days off before the next game, Tuesday night at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. I hate to admit it after being such a supporter for so long, but it is time.

Across The Sound

Anders Nilsson was sharp in his return to the Sound Tigers crease last night, leading the baby Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the Providence Bruins. The official recap can be found right here.

The Sound Tigers now travel to Manchester for a 3 p.m. game at Verizon Wireless Arena Sunday afternoon against the Monarchs. The two teams play again at Webster Bank Arena next Saturday at 7 p.m.
