Another third period….another third period lackluster performance by the New York Islanders last night as they fell to their cross town rivals, the New York Rangers for the second time in three nights, 4-1 at Madison Square Garden.

With the defeat, the likelihood that New York are sellers at the March 5 trading deadline became that much more real. Sure, they are still only 7 points shy of the last wild card spot in the Eastern conference, but games remaining, teams to jump and games in hand will seal their fate in the end.

Henrik Lundqvist was spectacular through the first two periods but really did not have to work in the third as the forecheck pressure in the offensive zone dried up for the Islanders. As the Rangers sat back and waited for the eventual defensive letdown, it occured when Cal Clutterbuck fell at the blueline in his defensive zone and his man Derek Brassard was able to bury a cross ice pass behind Evgeni Nabokov.

The reality now is that Garth Snow has assets to talk to other general managers about, kids to bring up from the American Hockey League and get a taste for National Hockey League action and begin working on a plan for the summer of 2014 leading into the final training camp in Long Island.

With Andrew MacDonald and Thomas Vanek the two primary chips for which Snow can get a return for, teams around the league are very interested in both. There is a mandatory trade freeze that will occur on February 7 and last through the Olympic break so in all probability, those two players could not be in blue and orange in little over a months time.

Finally a break in the schedule as the Islanders have three days off before their next contest in Washington on Tuesday night.
