It’s Islanders game day, and it’s also the day after the news about Thomas Vanek turning down the Islanders offer first broke. The dust has settled a bit and everyone can begin looking past the brief time that was Thomas Vanek’s time on Long Island.

While most Islanders fans were hoping Vanek would sign long term with the team, it’s safe to assume to the majority also had it in the back of their minds that it was a long shot of actually happening. The quotes we all heard throughout his time on Long Island made the signing sound like a real possibility, but at the end of the day, he was a rental player to hopefully help the Isles return to the playoffs. Although it’s unclear when a deal will be made, the next question is will Vanek be in the lineup before the NHL heads into the Olympic break?

Front office and roster moves aside, the Islanders most turn their focus to the Washington Capitals tonight, who just came off a 6-5 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday (scored by of course, Alex Ovechkin).
