As Darren Dreger tweeted out on Tuesday morning, the New York Islanders may need to cultivate a three-team trade in order to acquire Matt Duchene.

Dreger tweeted that a three-team deal could be in play, given that Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic may not be the best fit in Colorado. Garth Snow could cultivate a move that can bring two impact players to the New York Islanders, especially due to the fact that Hamonic is heavily coveted but the Oilers.

One way the Islanders could do that is by inquiring about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. He doesn’t have the same amount of chemistry with John Tavares as Jordan Eberle, who gelled with the New York Islanders captain in various international tournaments. But RNH is a player that the Oilers have been shopping as of late, and he could see himself in a New York Islanders jersey if Garth Snow makes the right deal.

And now that Edmonton has brought in David Desharnais from Montreal, maybe having RNH and Leon Draisaitl might make things a little crowded in the middle for Edmonton.

How it All Shakes Out

So, how would Garth Snow be able to acquire both Nugent-Hopkins and Duchene you ask? He would have to sacrifice some of the prospects.

As I see it, if the New York Islanders send a guy like Barzal, as well as first-round picks to Colorado, and Hamonic to Edmonton. The trade could possibly be a done deal.

Edmonton would acquire the defenseman they’ve been waiting for, and Colorado would be able to get younger and better (given a guy like Griffin Reinhart could be sent to Colorado from Edmonton’s side, Colorado gets the young defenseman they’ve been coveting as well). This deal might sound crazy, but the conditions are right for Garth Snow to pull it off.

The New York Islanders may be finding themselves with two new additions and the deadline that could push them over the edge into playoff contention.
