Billy Jaffe not Returning this season?

AUTHOR: John Panarese | IN: Islanders, Off Season, Other Stuff | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

According to a post I read on IPB, it appears Billy Jaffe is not going to be offered a contract with MSG to be the color man this season for the Islanders. I do not know if this information is “officially” true as of yet, but from what I read, I am led to believe that it is so.
Personally, I find this to be quite disappointing and discouraging. Jaffe’s analysis over the last four years has been so insightful and impressive. As a student of the game of hockey, he taught me so much by listening [...]

2009-10 Stats
69GP 3G, 18A, 21Pts, -5, 44PM, 1PPG
Amazing that he only missed just a few games from the shattering of his jaw, thanks to Alex Ovechkin’s slapper.
To me – this young man from Colorado College by way of Minnesota – made the most strides of any player on this team.  Not just from the offensive or defensive standpoints, but the impression standpoint.  To me – the beginning of the season, Jack looked a bit uncomfortable with the puck.  This skill was told to be one of his best.  As the season progressed, and the comfortability level got more and more [...]

Congrats to Philly and Chicago

Imagine – two teams that dominated the bottom of the standings just three years ago, are playing for Lord Stanley’s Cup starting on Saturday in the City of the Big Shoulders.
It can happen Isles fans!
But first of all, let me congratulate the fans of these two cities, for getting the chance to play for the chalice!  It is a great feeling (I forgot – but I heard it is…).
Enjoy it – and please don’t destroy your city, no matter what the outcome is.  It is not worth it – to loot and destroy because of the result of a hockey [...]

Wow … that’s all I can say

If anyone would have told me that both the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins would not be around for the Conference finals, I would have thought them insane. And, on top of that, if that same person would have told me that the Montreal Canadians would eliminate both the Caps and Pens in subsequent rounds, I’d have Really believed they needed to be committed. Yet, that is what exactly happened.
The playoffs have been extremely entertaining and exciting. The Flyers come back from being down 3 games to 0 and take a page out of the book [...]

General observations on the playoffs … yeah, I’m gonna shoot my big mouth off

Allow me to climb on my soap box. I start with the disclaimer that this is completely based on personal opinion and, thus, I seek not to offend or invite any flaming. However, as a fan of the game of hockey, as well as being an Islander fan, I have been struck by a couple of things as these 2009-2010 playoffs have unfolded for the NHL.
Firstly, I must make the point that I have enjoyed every series. I’ve had the good fortune of catching quite a bit of hockey over the last month, and having no life, [...]

Playing for pride or playing for draft position?

AUTHOR: John Panarese | IN: Islanders, Other Stuff | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

This is purely a personal opinion based post, but I have found it disturbing that the discussion over whether the Islanders should “tank” the rest of the season in favor of a top 5 pick or should they play out the remainder of the season to attempt to make the playoffs or, at least, give it their best shot, is even taking place. I’ve heard it called, “playing for pride, verses playing for the draft”, but, to me, it is more than that.
The reality is, yes, the New York Islanders are rebuilding, and those of us in Islanders country [...]

Westward bound

AUTHOR: Gary Harding | IN: Islanders, Other Stuff | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Sitting at JFK waiting to get on my flight to the west coast.   This is my first ‘road trip’ in a while.  I do not call the Florida ones road trips, because it is a blip in my timeshare stay.  This is a real excursion.  I am going to all three games on this trip – Vancover, Anaheim, and Los Angeles.  I am looking forward to some sun, some time with my beautiful wife, and also some time to see my sister and her husband in California as well.
As for the hockey team, what a nice weekend.  4 out of [...]

Streit vs Gordon Round2

AUTHOR: Gary Harding | IN: Other Stuff | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The Swiss get the undaunting task of facing the US again today.  Mark Streit – the Swiss Captain is looking forward to the challenge, but knows what to expect, as he commented to Katie Strang of Newsday.
It’s gonna be a big challenge against the US. We are the clear underdog in this game, they have a lot of momentum after their big win vs. Canada,” Streit said. “We wanna play really good team defense and we need to use our speed and keep it really simple.
The US, as I say about the Islanders all the time, need to keep the [...]
