Opening Night – Period 1

Starting lineup – Eaton and Martinek on Defense – Konopka centering Moulson and Hunter – and DiPietro in nets.  For Dallas – Grossman and Robidas on Defense – Neal, Eriksson (game winner last night) and Richards up front – and Lehtonen in nets.

BTW – my prediction is that we improve on last season’s numbers by at least 8 points.  Will that be a playoff spot?  Still not sure.

The team ‘pump up’ theme is going on – the guys emphatically saying that “WE ARE READY!” Let’s hope that is the case.

Gillies getting on of the loudest ovations.  He is such a fan favorite.  Nino as well, along with Ricky and JT.

Crowd is about 11K or so.  Not the kind of numbers you would be hoping for an opening night crowd.  But wins will get the fans back.

Rex Ryan is dropping the opening puck drop.

FIrst minute – Dp gets his first taste of the puck – as the Isles come brack down the ice – and a penalty gets called on Ott.

First PP of the season – No Okie – but let’s see how Wisniewski runs it.

As the fans were booing the Isles skating backwards in the defensive zone, Dallas trips an Islander giving a 9 second 5 on 3.

Islanders showing a lot of hitting – something that was lacking last season.  Hopefully – if Trent stays healthy – there will be a lot of hitting.

So far – Isles seem to playing a conservative game – but the shot clock has them outshooting Dallas 17 -1.. We know that is not right.

Nino almost has a golden opportunity.  He does not look like a young 18 year old by any stretch of the imagination.

On a Comeau penalty – Jamie Benn gets a deflection on a shot from the point to tuck home past DP – 1-0 DALLAS.

A few minutes later, Dallas scores again – 2-0.  Not the start that Islander fans wanted, for sure.  Robidas get the goal shooting through a screen.

Team starting to look sloppy – but getting Konopka to ‘dude’ it up – may get the team to be a little more motivated.

Parenteau had a great effort but Lehtonen covered it up.

Nassau County Exec Mangano on an interview with Howie Rose said that the Islanders need a new state of the art arena.  Keep saying that sir!

DP had his first walkabout of the season with delighted the gans immensely.  14 minutes into the season and the Loudville group starts chanting “WE WANT ROLLIE!”

Taveras on the deck – hit with an elbow.  Left the iceon his own power – off to the dressing room – no penalty on the play.

Eaton gets called for interference. Isles1-2 on the kill – need to make a statement now. DP make big stop – and the Isles escape the kill.

Not a good period – need to make some adjustments and get a little more finesse.  Hopefully – JT is back too.
