“El Cubano” signs on the dotted line

By Gary Harding

In a move that was most fans new was going to happen, but awaiting a little impatiently, Al Montoya has been signed to a one-year extension with the Islanders.

The deal is a one way contract as well, which should mean that it will be DiPietro and Montoya as the 2011-12 Islander goaltending tandem, with Kevin Poulin and Mikko Koskinen battling for the top spot in Bridgeport next season.

“It feels great,” Montoya said when reached by telephone Tuesday tp Katie Strang of Newsday. “I’m very grateful I got this chance and opportunity.”

We the fans feel exactly the same way!

I guess that Garth heard my positive vibes about this…. Now – get “Grabby” signed!

In another story – Doug Weight’s season is officially over, and perhaps his career as a player.  According to Newsday, the 40 year old Captain will not play again due to the ailing back, and he is contemplating calling it a career.

“I would lean more toward retirement than I would playing,” Weight said to Newsday’s Katie Strang. “But by no means have I made that decision. I want to make sure my mind’s right, and I think I’ve earned that. I want to make sure that’s what I want. I don’t what this team needs right now, but I want to sit back and see how things go here and see how I feel.

Doug – if it is retirement – we wish you the best, and we hope that your career in the sport continues here.

Also – news out of practice today is that Bruno Gervais and Milan Jurcina are nursing injuries and may not be in the lineup in New Jersey tomorrow.  This is not a good way to end the season, folks!

Great Booster Club meeting last night with Shakey.  We got to see the masks, and got a lot of great info about the team.  Well done!
