First – the young Finnish Goaltender Koskinen. With the considerable issues of one Rick D, having a corps of goalies in waiting is only a benefit for this young Islander team. Mikko was supposed to spend the entire year in Bridgeport, getting a handle of the North American game, and gain some serious experience. But we all know we had Monty Hall’s curtians of Goaltenders coming up and down, and unfortunately, Mikko had to play some games for the Islanders. He had some issues, but at times showed the promise that made him the 31st pick of the draft a few years ago. For this player I will give a C overall, but a B for effort under difficult circumstances.
As far as Mark Eaton, I am going to give him a “C” too. He did not have enough games in due to his hip injury which knocked him at 34 played this season. He is the type of player that will not provide flash and fluff. He will be the yeoman like player that will give the effort, but not be in the highlight reels. I like his play, and depending on what direction Garth goes, will be a good veteran presence for this young team. With the play of Hamonic, it may be a numbers game as to who stays and who goes, but if #4 remains, he will be a good veteran presence and one that the young players can lean up to for advice.
As far as the playoffs go, happy for the Canucks for pulling off the victory over the Preds, and last night for the 3-2 win over the Sharks. This series is going to be an all-out war. I think it is a war of respect. It will be fun to watch. I am calling Canucks in 7 and will need every bit of the seven to get it done.
With the East, I just think Tampa Bay has their destiny year. With the Islander connection (Roloson, Bergenheim, Thompson, and even Bergeron), they are playing havoc on the Bruin team, that rebounded nicely from their first round woes, and swept Philly out of the playoffs. I am calling Tampa in 6.
Tomorrow – I will come out with reviews on Wishart, Hunter and Gervais.
Have a great day! Gary
