If the Islanders slipped to 4th then they would play the winners of the Atlantic division if the Rangers take the 1st seed and the 8th seed is Boston/Ottawa/Detroit, right now that is the Montreal Canadiens. In three games this season the Islanders lost all three in regulation however it is hard to get a true scale of this match up as there wasnt a starter v starter game on which both teams hadn’t played the night before and two games featured Johnson and Neuvirth starting however the Islanders did face backup Torkarski once and despite scoring four times still came out with a regulation defeat

Likelihood of first round match up: With the Penguins slumping heavily it makes it less likely that the Islanders slip to a wildcard spot, especially if the Islanders win in Pittsburgh later in the week. Montreal are also tied for the lead with Tampa Bay so that could easily change over the course of the last few games.

Prediction: More than any other match up, this one would be decided by goaltending. Carey Price is currently in the middle of one of the best seasons by a goaltender in NHL history and could walk away with both the Hart and Vezina trophies and while the Canadiens by not be the best skating team Price is more than able to mask those flaws. Outside of the game in January, Jaroslav Halak has always done well against his former team and he would no doubt want to prove a point against them in a play off series, this could definitely go to 6/7 games.
