Is it time for the Islanders to call up promising defense man Ryan Pulock?

The Islanders banged up defense takes another hit with news breaking about an Adam Pelech injury.  The Islanders twitter gave an injury update stating that “Adam Pelech is out indefinitely with an upper body injury. He is still being evaluated.”  This is obviously bad news, but this gives the Isles the opportunity to give another young defense man an opportunity at the NHL level.

I’m not gonna speculate on the length or severity of Adam Pelech’s injury.  Hopefully he can come back sooner rather than later.  He showed some promise since being called up and was given a great chance to gain experience with Hamonic and Boychuk out for extended periods of time.  He was coming off a game with an assist and played solid in the back against the crosstown rival Rangers.

The latest flesh wound to the defense forces the Islanders to make a tough decision.  Scott Mayfield filled in for Pelech against the Canucks yesterday and could be a decent option for the time being.  Regardless, the Isles are going to need to get a seventh d man on the roster with Pelech sidelined.

This is the perfect time to bring up Ryan Pulock.  He is one of the more promising young players in the Islanders organization and deserves to get a shot.  I would love to see Pulock get a chance to play right now.  The Islanders are off until Friday so he has the opportunity to come up and get comfortable before facing off against Ottawa on Friday.  Take off the training wheels for now and if he isn’t playing well in a couple weeks then send him back down to Bridgeport for more seasoning.  It would be nice to see another young defense man come up. God knows Isles fans deserve it after having suffered through Brian Strait in a top 4 pairing recently.
