Luke Kunin

Age: 18
Size: 6’0”/196lbs
Position: C
Points: 32

Sportsnet’s Damien Cox has the New York Islanders selecting Chesterfield, MO native Luke Kunin in the first round with the 19thoverall pick.

The 18-year-old is currently plying his trade with the University of Wisconsin of the NCAA. A league starting to turn heads with the way that it develops players and prepares them for like in the big league.

At 6’0” and 196lbs Kunin is by no means a small body on the ice. Not known for his physical play the center is more of a fines player. Rather relying on his, “good hands, puck skills […] and really accurate release” according to eliteprospect.com.

At center, the Islanders are set, with a number of centers already on the books. A few are pending free agents, either restricted or unrestricted. But depth at center is good in the senior squad. Drafting Kunin would stock the shelf for a few years down the road.

Some of those free agents will be on their way out, certainly to be replaced by players already in the system looking to make the jump. Players like Matthew Barzal and/or Joshua Ho-Sang could make the senior team out of camp next year.
