New York Islanders Defensive Backbone Remains Intact

With the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs in the rearview mirror, the New York Islanders will now focus on who will be on the team next season.
The big news that came out of the Islanders locker clean out was that Islanders defensemen, Travis Hamonic WILL BE an Islander next season. Hamonic informed GM Garth Snow this past week that he will rescind his trade request.
Hamonic, who is only 25-years-old, posted 21 points and helped the Islanders to the second 100 point season, as well as winning their first playoff series since 1993.
The rumour, which was made public back in November, was that Hamonic wanted to be traded to the Winnipeg Jets to be closer to home, due to news that the health of a family member was not good.
Snow had made many attempts during the season to find a suitable trade for the Islanders number one defensemen, but was unsuccessful in finding something he liked. With Hamonic’s cap friendly $3.86 million contracts suitors must have been plenty.
Hamonic Loves Being an Islander
Thankfully, Hamonic loves being here in New York. According to the New York Post Hamonic was quoted saying:
“I love it here, I honestly do. I love living here, and I love everything that being an Islander is. I couldn’t be any more ecstatic or happy to know that especially things back home stabilized, and I think that’s the main thing. I just couldn’t be more grateful.”
“With that, I love being an Islander. It’s my home here. My family loves it. We enjoy living here. I obviously enjoy my teammates. I love them. I love this organization. I said it the other day — being an Islander is one of the best things I do with life. I could not be more eager for next year’s training camp and looking forward to a good summer of trying to get healthy and hit the ground running next year.”

Not only did the New York media cover the shocking news, but the Edmonton Journal reacted to the latest news as well. David Staples of the Edmonton Journal also reported on the Hamonic news by saying that the Oilers will now have to “fish in the depleted waters” for a top right-handed defensemen.
It’s sad to hear that Edmonton will have to keep looking for a top-paring right handed defensemen. Fortunately for us in New York, Hammer is here to stay!
