A brief tour of New York Islanders news from around the web. What do you need to know as an Islanders fan, brought to you daily first thing in the morning!

Frans Nielsen is a pending unrestricted free agent going into July 1st. The New York Islanders and Frans’ representatives have met at least once, but to date have not formalized a deal.

As the days go it grows increasingly likely that Nielsen will be on his way out come the July 1st deadline. His current deal of $2.75 million and he will be looking for an upgrade on that number. Something the Islanders GM Garth Snow might not want to do.

If Nielsen goes, who do the Isles turn to instead? Today’s Slapshot have said that the Islanders could turn their attentions to St. Louis Blues center and pending free agent; David Backes.

Backes has great faceoff stats, hovering around 50% over his entire career. But at 32-years-old himself and coming off a $4.5 million cap hit, GM Snow should be wary of giving too much. Perhaps the real answer lies within the organization rather than going to free agency.
