New York Islanders Daily Links: Martin Not Bitter

A look around the web at the latest New York Islanders news. Makes Eyes On Isles your go to website for all things Islanders.
It’s been no secret that Matt Martin will be leaving the Islanders to hit free agency. The hard hitting forward has drew interest from six teams; the Bruins, Canadiens, Leafs, Kings, Flames and Red Wings.
Arthur Staple says that Martin is not bitter, he understands it’s a business. On the ice Matt Martin is a physical presence, he leads the league in hits every year. The problem with him getting $3 million a year is his lack of offense.
Martin isn’t a scorer, he just set a career high in goals with 10 this past year. Another downside is that Matt Martin doesn’t kill penalties. The Islanders just locked up Casey Cizikas to an extension and Cal Clutterbuck will be hitting free agency next year.
This means that “the best fourth line in hockey” will be broken up. I loved the Islanders fourth line, they were able to set the tone and throughout the season they were the Islanders most consistent line.
Although if you told me I can only take two of the three from the fourth line; I’m taking Cizikas and Clutterbuck. The main difference is that Cizikas and Clutterbuck can kill penalties and that’s where their value comes from.
Martin can’t kill penalties. Clutterbuck also has a better wrist shot so he is more of a scoring threat than really both Martin and Cizikas but what makes Cizikas valuable is his two way play. I like Martin, I just don’t think it would be wise for Garth Snow to spend that much money on him just for his hits and locker room presence.
