New York Islanders: The Day That Garth Stood Still

Shea Weber
Headline: “The New York Islanders have finally found the missing piece to their team. By obtaining Shea Weber this afternoon, from the Nashville Predators, The Isles should have no problem defeating the 2013 Pittsburgh Penguins in that year’s opening round. Weber also gives them a reasonable chance at advancing past the Rangers in the following round.”
Right guy, right time in his contract, wrong time in his career. Despite not winning a string of Norris Trophies, I think Weber has been the best defenseman in the league the past five or six years. But this isn’t the time to surrender a 25-year-old all-star to get him. That’s the mistake Montreal made. I am happy it wasn’t one of Snow’s.
And I owe Weber an apology for that snide opening paragraph. I do think they would have beaten Pittsburgh with Weber. He deserves more credit than to say he would have only turned the one series. They most assuredly would have beaten the Caps. And 25 minutes per game of Weber might have even carried them past Tampa this spring.
