We just saw how crazy July 1st can get for NHL free agency. It seems like there is breaking news every minute. The New York Islanders made their fair share of news that day as well. My question is; is the Tavares recruiting starting two years early?

The Islanders captain John Tavares is set to hit free agency in 2018. The budding superstar is only a $5.5 million cap hit through then so it is expected for him to get a significant raise. It looks like the Islanders may have some competition.

The Boston Bruins tweeted out a video of John Tavares for their new episode of Bruins Academy.

Wait hold on a second! Why is John Tavares in a video for the Bruins don’t they have their own players to market! Certainly with the help of Arthur Staple it sent #IslesTwitter into a frenzy. Are the Bruins thinking ahead to 2018.

I’m sorry, as an Islanders fan I couldn’t help but let the thought creep into my head as unlikely as this may be. It’s not always easy being the positive thinker. Are the Bruins recruiting John Tavares? Most likely no, but it is a scary thought.

There were rumors of Tavares going to his home town Toronto Maple Leafs and now he’s a feature in the Bruins Academy. I’m not too familiar with the Bruins Academy, it just came off as weird that they would feature someone not even on their own team.

As a sigh of relief I honestly think Tavares re-signs here. He seems like an extremely loyal guy, and wants to see this thing through. From day one he realized his role as savior of this franchise and he’s never shied away from it once.

It really depends on how the Islanders do over the next two years but I don’t see Tavares bolting out the door as they are a team on the brink of contention. I’m going to hold the horses on the Tavares recruiting for now, but the 2018 Tavares watch is going to be something else.
