Friday Funday: Most Valuable New York Islanders Card

A Wayne Gretzky rookie card recently sold for $465,000 USD at auction. It got us thinking. What would be the most valuable New York Islanders card?
When the greatest player’s rookie card goes on the auction block you know the number is going to be astronomical. And astronomical it was; $465,000 was what was paid for a 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card. So what’s the most valuable New York Islanders card out there?
Wayne Gretzky is arguably the greatest hockey player to ever play the game. We say arguably because if you ask Wayne he’ll tell you that Gordie Howe is the greatest player to play the game.
But out there today, what’s the most someone could fetch at open auction for a hockey card with a New York Islander on it? Is it in the thousands? Hundreds?
The most expensive card we could find was a 2009-2010 authentic game used autographed number patch by Steven Stamkos and our very own John Tavares. The card is just one of five made and is worth $649.99.
It’s not a Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy or even Clark Gillies rookie card. It’s not a Bryan Trottier, Billy Smith, or Bill Torrey game worn autographed card (mainly because they didn’t make those in their days).
By our account, the card the is worth the most with a New York Islander on it is that autographed John Tavares authentic game used autographed number patch.
It’s rare and it has two autographs from two of the most offensively gifted players in the league. It’s nowhere near the worth of that 1979 Wayne Gretzky rookie card.

But if either of these two Toronto boys near Gretzky’s 61 records, 4 Stanley Cups, and countless other awards, maybe the value of the card might go up a notch. But until then, this $650 card might be the closest we get.
