When Ryan Strome was drafted fifth overall in 2011, hopes were extremely high for the prospect. Unfortunately, the expectations may have been too much, as he has seemingly fallen off the map.

In his rookie campaign, Strome produced solid numbers, followed up by a consistent and pleasant sophomore season.

But then the slump hit in his junior year, with his play, production and confidence completely pushed off a cliff. He was frequently benched and even sent back down to the minors at one point, before being called back up just to ride the bench some more (even during the playoffs).

Strome’s Uncertainty

Other than Halak, whom Garth Snow indicated might be traded, Strome’s future is among the most uncertain of any Islander.

As of today, Ryan Strome is still an unsigned RFA and there has been virtually little to no news about the status of his potential signing. The reason for this is likely because Strome feels he is worth more than the Isles are willing to offer, which is easily debatable after his dim season.

Unless Strome can prove to the team his worth they may try to ship him out, similar to how Reinhart was swapped around for a few golden picks. But unlike Reinhart, Strome has proven he is capable at the NHL level, it’s just a matter of getting back there.

With plenty of talented prospects not far behind Strome, he has become much more expendable than other players on the team.

If the Isles can’t sign him or he fails to pick up his play, look for Strome to be dealt at some point during the season.
