In most cases veteran players are the ones who arrive to camp early to get settled in. So it was a bit of a surprise when 19 year old Mathew Barzal was out on the ice for an informal skate.

Barzal is attempting to make the Islanders roster after having an impressive camp last year. He is going to need a good camp again in order for him to have a chance at making the team.

He’s made a good first impression at least, the work ethic seems to be there as these workouts are voluntary and are mostly meant for veteran players. It’s a good thing that he’s out on the ice with players like Josh Bailey, Travis Hamonic and Johnny Boychuk.

Barzal is too young for the AHL so it is either stay with the Islanders or go back to Seattle. There isn’t much room left for growth so it might be ideal for the Islanders to keep the playmaker around.
