The New York Islanders finished up the preseason with a lackluster performance against the Washington Capitals. They got shutout 4-0 in the final tuneup game, now it’s on to the real deal.

Despite the loss, which felt like the Islanders were just trying to get through rather than fight through, there were some positives. At least the young guns got a learning experience out of this. Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier have never seen this level of competition before.

The two held their own against a very strong Capitals team. There definitely is still room for improvement, but there are a lot of good signs coming from these two that make you feel confident.

The scary thing from this game was realizing that this team probably finishes second in the Metropolitan Division behind the defending champion Penguins. If the Isles finish third that means it’s Washington in round one and if there is a round two it’ll most likely be Pittsburgh, that’s a daunting task.

It’s too early to think ahead because things almost always never turn out as expected, but scary nonetheless.
