After jumping out to an early two goal lead the Islanders struggles kicked in. The Oilers would go on to win 4-3 in a shootout.

It took only 13 second for the Islanders to get on the board. Cal Clutterbuck playing on the top line set up Nick Leddy on a nice feed to beat Cam Talbot. Shane Prince would add another five minutes later and the Isles had an early two goal lead.

That’d didn’t last long at all. Patrick Maroon was able to tip one past Jaroslav Halak not even three minutes later. The Oilers would add another one on the power play before the end of the period. The Isles early two goal lead was erased and they headed into the dressing room tied at two.

In the second period Casey Cizikas was able to beat Talbot to put the Isles back on top.

The one goal lead was short lived again, as Milan Lucic was able to beat Halak on the power play to tie the game at three.

The penalty kill, which is normally a strength has been brutally bad in recent games. Halak played well for the most part, there wasn’t much he could do on the first two goals. So you can’t really blame him for tonight.

The third period was quiet, so for the second game in a row the Islanders would need overtime. The Oilers had more opportunities on the 3 on 3 OT, although John Tavares had a pretty good chance towards the end of the OT period.

In the shootout the Islanders put Nick Leddy, Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera out there. Ladd missed the net completely while both Leddy and Chimera’s attempts were blocked.

Halak was able to stop Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins but not Mark Letestu. The Isles would drop their second straight shootout.

The Islanders needed this game. Jumping out to a two goal lead so early on and blowing it is just gut wrenching. Their struggles were shown with the secondary scoring coming from unusual sources while Andrew Ladd, Jason Chimera, Ryan Strome and Anders Lee continue to no show.

The Islanders are being exposed as a team with a ton of weaknesses early on this season. It’s getting ugly rather quick on this young season.
