New York Islanders Travis Hamonic out 4-6 Weeks with Injury

The New York Islanders woes continue with another defenseman going down with a long-term injury.

News broke on Sunday that New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic would be sidelined 4-6 weeks with an upper-body injury. Adding another D to the injured reserve list.

Hamonic left the game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday after blocking a shot with his arm in the first period. Hamonic would not return to the game. Signaling something much more serious.

What’s keeping Hamonic out of the lineup exactly isn’t known yet, it’s just being listed as an upper-body injury. But now the Isles are without, like it or not, one of their top pairing defenceman.

Hamonic’s absence will likely force coach Jack Capuano to push Johnny Boychuk back into a top pairing with Nick Leddy. Although Boychuk himself isn’t looking 100% after last nights game.

After falling awkwardly into the boards trying to kill a penalty, Boychuk had difficulty just skating off the ice on his own. Luckily he was able to come back and finish the game. Maybe more ice-time isn’t what the doctor ordered for Boychuk.

With Hamonic gone for the net few weeks, they need to dip into the farm system to fill the gap. The natural selection would be Adam Pelech. Ryan Pulock would have been the first name on the list, but he’s out with a broken foot after coming into the lineup when Nick Leddy sat out a game earlier this season.

Pelech, a left shot, is on the final year of his entry-level contract with the Islanders. Sent down to Bridgeport before the season started, he’ll be looking to prove he’s got something to offer the Islanders.
