Torrey Division Matchup #4

(4) John Tonelli v. (6) Pierre Turgeon

Upset time! The five seat takes out the four seat! Pierre Turgeon, with 54% of the vote takes down John Tonelli and his four Stanley Cups!

Being a big art of the Islanders dynasty and 544 points as an Islander, Tonelli has some serious clout to his name. But then came all the contract drama, where Tonelli held out for a better deal. And the Isles didn’t oblige. Eventually, Tonelli was traded off to the Calgary Flames.

It was a disappointing end to his time with the Isles. And maybe that was enough for our fans to cast some votes for the French Canadian from Rouyn-Noranda.

Sure, the Islanders lost Pat LaFontaine (more from him in the Arbour division) in order to acquire Pierre Turgeon. But the former Buffalo Sabre was lights out for the Islanders.

In his second season with the Islanders Turgeon put up a 132 point campaign (LaFontaine would get 148 that very same year) on his way to a Lady Byng award. More importantly, the Islanders made the playoffs that season after missing out in the last two.

With Turgeon’s 13 points in 11 playoff games that season the Islanders bounced both the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins, before meeting the Montréal Canadiens in the conference finals, who lost only two games that entire post-season.
