The New York Islanders end the season with a bench boss that carries the “interim” prefix before his title. Do the Isles make him permanent or do they look elsewhere? Here are five options.

When the New York Islanders fired longtime coach Jack Capuano they didn’t start a coaching search, instead, trusting the man who was Capuano’s assistant to get the Islanders out of their situation. And it almost worked.

Now that the Islanders have time they can properly initiate a coaching search. They can appoint someone permanently. Someone who’s going to take this franchise where it deserves to be; the playoffs.

The Islanders have messed around with the coaching position for years. Generally preferring to pay less for untested talent in the hopes that it works out. Like Jack Capuano, who came directly from the AHL.

But with John Tavares’ extension hanging over every decision the Islanders take, the time for gambling with coaching appointments is over.

The Islanders need a coach that has the ability to get the best out of this group of players. Here are five options that the Islanders have either already spoken to or should speak to immediately.
