New York Islanders Coaching Options Are Plentyful
Pedigree: 6 Years NHL Experience, Isles Reached Out
Gerard Gallant is on this list simply because at one point the Islanders expressed interest in the former Florida Panthers coach.
Shortly Jack Capuano was fired it emerged that the Islanders had permission to speak to the unceremoniously removed from his duties left waiting for a cab in the middle of a road trip, Panthers coach.
Gallant, we keep hearing, is a well-respected coach and one that players love to play for. Great qualities you want in a coach. But his tactical abilities remain to be desired.
In six years between the Blue Jackets and Panthers, Gallant has a 152-140-4-31 record (that third number represents ties). His .518 points percentage means that he averages 84 points in an 82 game regular season. Nowhere near good enough to make the playoffs.

It’s Doug Weight’s job to lose, but these other four candidates are real options for the Islanders, whether they’ve spoken to them yet or not.
