New York Islanders General Manager Garth Snow might’ve caught a break when the team announced that Doug Weight would return as coach.

The New York Islanders announcing that Doug Weight would return was the right move, in my opinion, but it did come with some potential downsides. Larry Brooks claims this all but seals Garth Snow‘s fate.

It’s a valid point. You don’t hire your coach and then fire your General Manager. At least that’s not what a well-functioning franchise would do.

Here’s what Brooks had to say “Make no mistake. The removal of the interim tag on Weight also represented the removal of the endangered label on Snow. That’s a fact.”

As much as I’m against bringing Garth Snow back for a 12th season I think Brooks is right. Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin aren’t going to cut Snow loose and then tell the new GM that he has to stick with Weight.

For instance, if the Isles did pursue the recently fired Dean Lombardi to fill the GM shoes he likely would want to bring in his man Darryl Sutter to coach the team. That’s how these things work they want to stick with “their guys”.

Having to sit through potentially another year of a Garth Snow run Islanders team is a scary thought.
