Goaltender J.F. Berube is expected to test free agency. Berube was a part of the New York Islanders three goalie system the past two years.

According to CBS Sports J.F. Berube is expected to hit free agency. He is not expected to return to the New York Islanders for the 2017-2018 season.

SHOCKING! Okay not really, this comes as no surprise. The Isles three goalie system was an absolute failure. First off they get their starting goalie (and his agent) angry and since he couldn’t get ample practice time, and other reasons too, his play diminished so poorly that he was sent to Bridgeport.

Thomas Greiss, who was underutilized early in the year, was unable to get consistent starts due to the ridiculous rotation of the three goalies. Then finally you have J.F. who took a significant step backward.

Berube was downright awful in his appearances this year. He posted a 3-2-2 record with a .889 save percentage and 3.42 GAA. Remember Berube was supposed to play in 28 games so he wouldn’t hit unrestricted free agency.

That was an epic failure. Ultimately when the Islanders ran with the Jaroslav Halak and Greiss combination they were fine. With Berube in the mix it threw a monkey wrench into the entire dynamic.

Both Halak and Greiss are under contract for next year, it makes sense to stick with the two of them. Who will be the starter? That question remains unanswered and will be a debate all offseason.
