Being a fan of the New York Islanders living in Florida, the New York Islanders playoff series win over the Florida Panthers one year ago lead up to what had to be the best day of my life.

For months leading up to the series, the Panthers fans at my school always tended to chirp me about how the New York Islanders would never be good enough to win a playoff series, nevertheless the Stanley Cup. That all changed when John Tavares put them to bed on April 24th, 2016.

I was the happiest person alive when I woke up that morning. I decided to wear my John Tavares jersey in mockery of what happened and held my head high the entire day. I used my newfound sense of power all day.

Through all of the hard years I’ve lived through with this team, there was never a time where I could even have a bit of an edge over any hockey fan I’ve had an argument with until that day.

I had no playoff series wins or regular season awards to show for it. It was season after of season of just silent acceptance that they were all right. We were bad. Until that day.

As I walked the halls of my school, it was a heartwarming sight to see the terror on each and every Panthers fan’s face as they saw me in my New York Islanders jersey. And even more heartbroken when they saw the number 91 on the back.

I’ve got to tell you, that was the proudest moment of my life. Being a fan of the New York Islanders for twelve years full of disappointment and agony. But being on top of the world, just for one day, was the greatest feeling I’ve ever felt in my entire life.
