The biggest question mark this offseason is whether or not the New York Islanders will extend their captain. Let’s discuss the scenarios.

It seems like every day the discussion in New York Islanders land is either arena challenges or the fate of John Tavares. Most recently it’s been the discussion of Tavares and his contract situation.

SNY’s Brian Erni and Andy Graziano had a back and forth discussion on this topic and a few good talking points came about that we should address.

The first interesting point made here was the reason for the recent arena ramblings was due to the Islanders trying to stabilize a stadium situation before their talks with JT. It makes sense, one of the biggest drawbacks of playing for the Islanders right now is the instability of where they play their home games.

The ideology here is that if they come up with a stable plan that it could help as a bargaining chip to keep Tavares here. Erni then brings up the emergence of Josh Ho-Sang and the potential of Mathew Barzal.

Both of these guys should be here to stay next year, and they could be very very solid NHL players to build a team around. After next year the Isles will have some cap space to work with.

Overall everyone is looking for the odds that Tavares extends his deal. Erni says 90/10 and Graziano says 70/30 that it gets done. I’d have to agree more with Erni here, but I do see the concerns from Graziano. It’s going to be a long summer.
