Greiss Saves the Day in Chicago

This is Greiss’ second appearance in this top ten and it won’t be his last.

On many nights, Thomas Greiss was the reason that the New York Islanders were still in the game. As was the case in Chicago.

The Isles were just at the halfway mark of their franchise record nine-game road trip when they entered Chicago with a 3-1-0 record after beating the Stars the night before 5-4.

For two-third of the game, the Isles were in control. But, in the third, as was the habit at this point, the Islanders let the game start slipping away. And with a 1-0 lead no-one felt safe.

The Blackhawks just kept coming. On this particular play, Richard Panik just strolled in, pulled two defenders dropped the puck to a streaking Jonathan Toews who spotted Ryan Hartman who shook a puck watching Josh Ho-Sang.

Everyone in Chicago thought it was a sure goal, a tap in. Greiss had other ideas. He simply reacted throwing out his pad and paddle and stopped Hartman right there on the doorstep.

Greiss was the only reason the Islanders went to overtime that night. If not for him they would have certainly lost that night simply because of how badly they played in the third period.

Maybe if the team had played to Greiss’ standard they might have taken the second point. You know that single point that kept the team from the playoffs. Just saying…maybe.
