New York Islanders Turbulent History with NHL Expansion Draft

2000: The Most Recent
The last expansion in the NHL occurred 17 years ago. Does it feel like it’s been that long? I guess I’m as forgetful as the NHL. Because almost out of spite, the protection scheme would be the same. Because, you know, that was a raging success.
I suppose the NHL got it franchise fees and the new teams didn’t disrupt the established power balance so win-win right?
In 2000 the league added the Minnesota Wild, putting a team back in a traditional hockey market, and in Columbus. Both teams would select a single player from every team except the recent additions to the league because that’s just adding insult to injury.
The Wild selected New York Islanders defender Ian Herbers and the Blue Jackets took Ted Drury. Of the two picks, Drury was the most “successful” because he played in the NHL. Sure, it was only a single game for the Blue Jackets but at least he played!

This time in 2017 teams can only protect a single goalie, and protection limits on forwards was reduced. Along with a single goalie teams can protect seven forwards and three defencemen or any combination for eight skaters.
The word is still out on whether Vegas will actually be competitive next season, but at least it seems like the league is trying. Unlike other years.
