Mathew Barzal Can Use A Win

After winning the WHL playoffs Mathew Barzal and his Seattle Thunderbirds next step was the CHL’s Memorial Cup. A tournament where the champions from the league’s three divisions and the host city would battle for Canadian Junior supremacy.

The Thunderbirds and Barzal were dominant in the WHL playoffs, losing four games in their run to the championship. Barzal took the playoff MVP honors with 25 points in 16 games played.

When it came to the Memorial Cup thought the Thunderbirds got blown out of the water. Losing all three games by a score of 18-3. Barzal had two assists.

The blowout led his coach to make the following comments about his team mentality after a loss in their third game:

"To me, we just didn’t have enough mentally. They’re all good character kids. It’s not that they didn’t work hard, there’s just no juice left mentally to keep fighting and pushing"

Next season Barzal will once again be aiming to get into the Isles squad, and after a disappointing end to his 2016-17 season as an Islander, he’ll want to show he’s got the mental toughness to be an NHL caliber player.

There’s no reason that Barzal can’t make this team out of camp. He did it last season, and you’d think that an extra year in the WHL only made him better. But, if spots are short to come by his competition with Joshua Ho-Sang and even Michael Dal Colle will be interesting.

Josh Ho-Sang made a strong case to make the team out of camp in 2017-18 after that dynamic 21 game try out. Dal Colle is still a longshot to make the team, he wasn’t exactly lights out in the AHL. But who knows what an offseason does to his game. Who though Beauvillier would make the team out of camp last season?
