The New York Islanders have to put their captain in a win now situation according to their head coach Doug Weight.

According to TSN, Doug Weight came out and said the New York Islanders have to be in a winning situation for their captain John Tavares. The Isles hope to extend Tavares on July 1, 2018 when free agency begins.

This was the exact Weight quote:

"“He’s been here seven, eight years and we need to put him in a position to win right now.”"

Doug is right, as much as he’s said that he wants to stay with the Islanders for his career it has to be the right situation. They owe it to him at this point in his career to put a team together that can contend.

In the Tavares era the team has made the playoffs three times and has yet to reach the conference final as we all know. That falls on the shoulders of Garth Snow for not putting together a competitive enough team.

Weight seemed to have a top forward in mind. He didn’t mention a name but he did say that the team could probably use a top three forward, which absolutely makes sense. The coach sang the praises of his defensive unit and said that the team will be focusing on offense.

I’m real curious to see who they lose in the expansion draft because that will help show the direction in which the team needs to go. It’s going to be a very stressful month.
