Number 3: Travis Hamonic (Round 2 Pick 53 2008)

This was a pretty easy choice. Despite a poor year last year Hamonic has been a great Islander. He’s a solid top four defenseman and when you consider that he was taken in the second round that makes it even better.

The Isles actually had three second round picks in 2008. Garth only landed on one, the Hamonic pick. The other two (who were selected before Hamonic mind you) were Corey Trivino at 36 and Aaron Ness at 40.

Trivino, a center has played zero games in the NHL, God knows where he is today. As for Ness he played a whopping 39 games in the league and has one NHL goal to his name.

There’s a pretty solid chance Hamonic gets dealt this offseason but that shouldn’t minimize his impact to this team. He made his debut as a 20-year old in 2010-2011 and has stuck ever sense. He’s still just 26-years old and is locked up for three more years on a pretty team friendly deal.

If the Isles do deal him they better get someone good in return. Garth knocked this selection out of the ballpark.
