New York Islanders Seven Trade Worthy Power-Forwards

Blake Wheeler
Christopher Lizza was the first person I saw suggest the Islanders make a move for Wheeler. Wheeler turns 31 this summer so he’s the oldest option I’d seriously consider for this role.
It is uncertain if this deal could actually work because of the 6’5″, 225lbs right-handed winger has a modified NMC with a 14 team no-trade list. I wouldn’t be surprised if LI was a no-go. But let’s imagine…
Wheeler comes with a $5,600,000 cap hit for two more years. He’s coming off his fourth season with 26+ goals and 60+ points. His positives include leadership, experience, size, a right-handed shot, defense, and scoring.
The price will be hefty for Winnipeg’s captain, but he endeared himself to me somewhat when he ruffled Malkin’s feathers last March.
It would be cool to reunite the current Jets captain with ex-teammate and former Jets cap Andrew Ladd.
Hamonic is from near the ‘peg; it might’ve been easier to just send him there in a package, but it’s too late now. Good luck in Calgary Hammer, sincere thanks for the spilled sweat and blood.
The Trade
Bailey had a great season last year. He’s cheaper than Wheeler, and over three years younger.
Draft picks, especially high ones, are always good to have…
Winnipeg needs help on the blue-line. Devon Toews is 23 and ready to start stepping up to the show. Plus he and Bailey combined cost over a million less than Wheeler.
We get Wheeler, for a fortune albeit, but this all-star caliber forward hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down entering his 30’s. He would, barring some catastrophe, make a marked impact for the Islanders.
