The New York Islanders have until 5:00 pm today to extend a qualifying offer to their RFA’s, one of which includes Calvin de Haan.

Today at 5:00 pm is the deadline for teams to extend their Restricted Free Agents a qualifying offer. Luckily for the New York Islanders, they only have one player to worry about and that is Calvin de Haan.

In his previous contract, which was a 3-year $5.9 million deal, he had a cap hit just under $2 million per year. You can expect de Haan to get a raise, the question then becomes how much of a rase would you give de Haan?

Mitch predicted that he would be between a $2.5-$3 million cap hit per year over four years. I could see the Islanders giving him an offer like $14 million over four years. That’s a cap hit of $3.5 million a year, a bit more than Mitch predicted.

With the Islanders current cap allocations at $65,602,500 they still have some room to work with. The league recently bumped the salary cap to $75 million so if the Isles extend de Haan at $3.5 million for this upcoming year that leaves them with an additional $5.9 million to work with.

Okay, hopefully Mitch’s guess is closer because if the Isles want Matt Duchene they’re going to need some more cap space. Being a GM is hard.
