Jordan Eberle

Just after the NHL Expansion Draft, where the New York Islanders lost their 2017 first round pick as well as Mikhail Grabovski and his $5 million contract. Opening up significant cap space to acquire a top level player to go alongside John Tavares.

The Isles did that by sending Ryan Strome to the Edmonton Oilers for Jordan Eberle and hs $6 million cap hit.

On the face of it, the Oilers get the short end of the stick. Strome isn’t the same player as Eberle is. Even if Strome lives up to that early 50 point potential the Oilers get a lesser player. Eberle, as we’ve already gone over, is a first line player.

But the Oilers get to shed $3.5 million on the cap this season, leaving them with enough room to sign Leon Draisaitl this year, and hopefully enough in 2018-19 to sign reigning Art Ross, Ted Lindsay and Hart Trophy winner Conor McDavid.

The issue with Garth is that all of these trades happened in the last three years. Before that, it was a lot of draft pick flipping or lower commodities being sent to other teams for hopes and prayers. It almost as if he’d never done this job before and was learning on the spot….

It looks like we have to keep Garth for a little while, so let’s hope that he’s finally leveled up in the GM game to make these trade more frequently than infrequently.
