The New York Islanders single strength going forward is their defensive depth. That’s going to happen when Garth Snow draft 16 defensemen between 2012 and 2017. That’s a lot of blueliners, who stands out?

Since 2012, 47% of New York Islanders GM Garth Snow’s draft picks have been defenders. That’s a lot of blueliners. The approach makes sense when you think about it.

There’s great value in finding one of those top pairing blue line players. Those Nick Leddy, Duncan Keith, Brent Burns types of players. Every team wants one but not every team can find one.

So if you can draft a few of them you’ve immediately created a need that 30 other teams in the NHL desperately want.

There’s no reason to believe that the New York Islanders have one or two of them in their system, but what do they have exactly?

Are they close to having that top pair guy? I wanted to look at the New York Islanders top three defenders and see where they are in their careers and what makes them a top prospects?

This list won’t deal with the players they already have in the regular lineup, but rather focus on the players that they have down in the AHL.
