The New York Islanders have been officially awarded the rights to build their new arena at Belmont Park. It’s been a long time coming, but the New York Islanders are getting a new arena.

Today Empire State Development has officially declared the New York Islanders bid the winner of the Belmont Park Request For Proposal. With this ends a long standing search for a place to call home. And it’s not in Brooklyn, in Hartford, or Québec City. It’s right at home in Nassau County.

Let all the jubilation out. Something insanely positive has happened to the New York Islanders.

It’s taken years to get here, and likely years off our natural lives in stressing about what might happen to the Islanders. But here we are. The New York Islanders will get a new shiny hockey first arena to call their own.

Don’t Forget About the Past

The New York Islanders had to suffer through a number of insufferable bumps in the road over the years. From the Lighthouse project, “the referendum”, and then to the Barclays Center. It was one pitfall after the next.

The running joke of the nomadic Islanders, who don’t have a home can finally be put to bed. Relocation speculation can be put to rest. The New York Islanders will have a forever home in Belmont Park.

Obstructed views, off centred score boards and even having a car occupy premium seating areas right along the glass will eventually be a thing of the past. (Sorry, YeSUV). The Islanders get to call the shots on their own 60,000 square foot, 18,000-seat multi-use arena.

The future hold so much promise for this franchise and its fan base that have suffered for a long time, that it’s not hard to get lost in the mob mentality of optimism.
