New York Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan opts for surgery on his shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season.

When Calvin de Haan went down with an injury it seemed like the New York Islanders knew it was going to be serious. Just this past week we wrote a few ideas on who could take over if in fact de Haan was done for the year.

Today Andy Graziano confirmed that Calvin de Haan needs surgery and he’ll miss the rest of the season.

Before his injury, Calvin de Haan was on pace for a career year in points. With 12 points in 33 games, he was on pace for 30 over a full 82 game season. Solid numbers from a second pairing defenseman.

In 2016-2017 Calvin de Haan had a career high in goals, assists, points, and plus-minus. He bet on himself and took a one-year deal worth $3.3 million. It was slightly less than we valued him at, but he was willing to take the deal in hopes of a big season that could yield a long-term deal.

The question for him now, is what kind of contract will he get and will it be from the Islanders? A season-ending injury in a contract year is the last thing anybody wants.

The Islanders certainly could use him, he’s their third best defenseman behind Nock Leddy and Johnny Boychuk there will be a big hole in his spot with him out the remainder of the season.

The Islanders, do have prospects like Sebastian Aho and Devon Toews waiting in the wings to get their opportunity, but they certainly won’t be as consistent as de Haan early on.

de Haan’s the kind of player you don’t appreciate until he’s missing from the lineup. Hopefully, Garth Snow see’s that and gives him a contract in the summer. We know how much help the Islanders could use defensively.
