LAS VEGAS, NV – DECEMBER 19: Shea Theodore /

Washington capitals. 6. 19. . .

Is this finally the Caps year? The Capitals are back atop the Metro Division with 51 points so far. Alex Ovechkin has 24 goals on the year and Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer provide a competent goalie duo.

LOS ANGELES kings. 5. 67. . .

With John Stevens behind the bench, the Kings look back to their dominant form. They have 51 points on the year and are second in the Pacific Division. Anze Kopitar is leading the way with 40 points and Jonathon Quick is back to his old self in net.

4. 30. . . . Winnipeg JETS

After just 87 points last year the Jets are on their way to a much better season with 52 as they are atop the Central Division. Blake Wheeler is having a monster year with 45 points of his own already and Connor Hellebuyck has looked much more comfortable this year at age 24.

. . nashville predators. 3. 151.

After a Cinderella trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017, the Preds have followed that up with a solid start this year. They’re second in the Central behind Winnipeg, with Filip Forsberg leading the way in scoring. Pekka Rinne has had a solid year for the Predators in goal.

. . . Vegas Golden knights. 2. 942

What a shock the Golden Knights have been. The newest NHL team is off to its best start in franchise history (lol). Through their first 37 games, they have 54 points. Jon Marchessault is the leading scorer for Vegas thus far.

. Tampa Bay lightning. 1. 23. .

The Lightning take the top spot in the January NHL Power Rankings. They have the most amount of points with 58 and they score like nobody’s business. Nikita Kucherov is leading the way with 56 points so far.  Andrei Vasilevskiy has filled in quite nicely for the parted Ben Bishop.

So the New York Islanders are in the middle of the pack for the NHL Power Rankings to no surprise. They have a lot to work on if they want to inch closer to the top 10 in order to consider themselves a true contender.
