As the 2018 trade deadline approaches the New York Islanders have a clear need; defense. With Johnny Boychuk and Calvin de Haan out of the lineup, the latter for the remainder of the season, they need bodies on the blueline.

The New York Islanders don’t just need anyone on the blueline. They have players that they can toss in bottom pairing roles or as a seventh man. They need help in the top four. Their dressing Dennis Seidenberg as a top pair defense. That’s how desperate they are.

Typically with injuries teams can rely on the prospect pipeline to fill the void. That isn’t necessarily the case for the New York Islanders. Their top-ranked defensive prospect, Devon Toews, is also out with injury. And Sebastian Aho, while getting a point and an assist in his third NHL game his defensive game could use some work.

With valid playoff aspirations, the Islanders need someone who can step in and add quality to the roster right now. That’s hopefully what they’ll do at the trade deadline.

TSN’s Frank Seravalli compiled a list of the top 20 players that will used as trade bait at the deadline. I’ve picked out a few defensemen that the Islanders can target that would improve the roster.

All three are players the New York Islanders should be targeting at the trade deadline to help them on the blueline and going forward. And all three present something different that the Islanders could use.

But as quality players, they won’t come cheap.
