Erik Gudbransson | Vancouver Canucks (LD)

Stats: 2 points | Contract: 1 year – $3.5 million

Why would the New York Islanders go after a player that has two points through 30 games? What is he adding to the team exactly?

Gudbransson is, believe it or not, a former third overall pick in the NHL draft. At 6’5″ and 220lbs his size plays a big part of his game. Something the New York Islanders definitely need.

Scott Mayfield has started taking the mantle as the big tough guy on the New York Islanders blue line. A role that’s clearly earned him a $7.25 million contract extension with the team.

But its a new role for Mayfield. He certainly has the size to play the “man-mountain” at 6’4″ 227lbs. Bringing in a guy like Erik Gudbransson could do a world of good for the young Mayfield.

This sounds like a lot for a rental, but with a $3.5 million cap hit and only $2.8 million left on the cap, the Islanders need to make room. Ideally, this trade could be made with just a draft pick, but the Isles need to clear up at least $700,000 of cap space. And so Shane Prince goes out as the tribute.
